The Enugu State Government has condemned the barbaric attack on a woman, Mrs Chinonso Echegi by her husband, Sunday Onyeahanachi Echegi.

LIB reported that Echegi cut off his wife’s hand over a misunderstanding at Ibagwa Ani in Nsukka Local Government Area of the state.

The victim is currently undergoing treatment at Enugu State Teaching Hospital while the fleeing suspect has been arrested.

Speaking through the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, the State Government condemned the barbaric attack and assured that the administration would ensure that the perpetrator faces the full wrath of the law.

Ms Enih, who visited the victim in the hospital said the tragic incident highlights the urgent need to eliminate gender-based violence (GBV).

“It is deeply heartbreaking and horrifying to share the tragic incident of Mrs. Chinonso Echegi, whose hand was brutally cut off by her husband, Mr. Sunday Onyeahanachi Echegi.

“She is currently battling for survival, having been transferred from Keoetochukwu Hospital Nsukka to Enugu State Teaching Hospital for advanced treatment,” Enih stated.

“This barbaric act is not just an attack on one person but a painful reminder of the urgent need to end gender-based violence (GBV) in our society. Violence against women and girls, in any form, is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in Enugu State.

“The Enugu State Government has taken immediate and decisive action to ensure that Mr. Sunday Onyeahanachi Echegi, the perpetrator of this heinous crime, is brought to justice.

“My office is working tirelessly, alongside relevant agencies, to guarantee that Mrs Chinonso Echegi receives all the support she needs and that the full weight of the law is brought down on the perpetrator.

“Let this serve as a severe warning to anyone who harbors intentions of committing acts of violence against women. Enugu State has zero tolerance for gender-based violence, femicide, and all forms of abuse.

We are committed to protecting the rights, safety, and dignity of every woman in our state.

“Gender-based violence is not just a private matter—it is a societal issue that affects us all. It robs families of loved ones, destroys lives, and holds back progress. We must all work together to raise awareness, support survivors, and hold perpetrators accountable.

“I call on all stakeholders, community leaders, and individuals to stand firm against GBV. Let us build a society where women and girls can live without fear, where their voices are heard, and their rights are upheld.

“To those who may think of committing such acts, know this: Enugu State will not hesitate to act. Justice will be served, and you will face the full consequences of your actions.

“Together, we can end GBV and create a safer, more equitable society. Let us all join hands to make this a reality.”
