2025.2.8 Beaten in Bhopal court over interfaith marriage, man arrested; no FIR against his assailants
Beaten in Bhopal court over interfaith marriage, man arrested; no FIR against his assailants
Police say couple placed under protection; assailants accused man of ‘love jihad’. No arrests made in the case so far

An interfaith couple who visited a court in Bhopal to register their marriage was targeted by members of right-wing outfits, who assaulted the man and accused him of “love jihad”, after which he was arrested on charges of forcing the woman to change her religion.
No FIR has been registered against his attackers.
The assault on the man, which took place in a busy courtroom, was captured on video, which has since spread online.
According to police officers, right-wing groups went to the court premises after being tipped off by “sources” about the couple deciding to register their marriage.
The man, a resident of Narsinghpur, had travelled to Bhopal with the woman, but could not complete the court formalities, police officers said.
Chandra Shekhar Tiwari, president of the Sanskriti Bachao Manch, which was among the groups who sent members to the court, alleged that the man had “multiple photographs and contact numbers of Hindu women on his phone and had coerced his partner into marriage”.
The group demanded that the police “charge the man under sections of rape”.
Bhopal ACP Akshay Chaudhary confirmed the incident and said the couple had come to Bhopal to marry under the Special Marriage Act.
“The couple was first taken under our custody and questioned. Their statements were taken down. The woman told us that she was being forced to marry him and change her religion,” he said.
According to sources, on Friday evening, the woman’s mother told police that the man had been pestering her daughter for the last three years.
The man has been booked under section 3/5 of the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 2021. Police said they have contacted his local police station to investigate any previous criminal records.
A senior police officer said, “No FIR has been registered against the attackers in the video. There is no complaint against them. The man has not given a statement against the attackers so far.”
2025.2.8 Bihar man deliberately breaks traffic rules to take revenge on wife amid divorce
In Bihar, a man from Patna is deliberately committing traffic violations using a bike registered in his estranged wife’s name, resulting in multiple fines.
A marital dispute in Bihar has taken an unusual and peculiar turn, leading to legal complications and police involvement. A woman from the Kazi Mohammadpur area of Muzaffarpur was married to a man from Patna last year. As part of the marriage, the woman’s father gifted a bike to the groom, but it was registered in the daughter’s name.
Approximately one and a half months after the wedding, disputes arose between the couple, prompting the wife to leave her husband’s home and return to her parents. The situation escalated to the point where divorce proceedings are now pending in court.
Revenge
In an act of retaliation, the husband began intentionally violating traffic rules using the bike registered in his wife’s name. This led to multiple fines being issued, all of which were notified to the wife’s phone. Initially, she paid the fines, but as their frequency increased, she became distressed and decided to take action.
According to the woman’s father, the traffic police have issued four challans in the last three months. He stated, “Initially, she paid the fines, but as they kept increasing, she decided to take action.”
When the woman contacted her husband to request the return of the bike, he refused, stating that he would not return it until the divorce was finalised. Frustrated by her husband’s actions, the woman lodged a complaint with the Patna Traffic Police, who directed her to the local police station.
Upon reaching Kazi Mohammadpur police station with her father, she was asked how she could prove that her husband was still in possession of the bike. The police advised her to submit an affidavit confirming that her husband was using the vehicle, which would serve as evidence in the case.
2025.2.7 ED probing ‘complex network’ of agents that illegally send Indians to U.S.
More than 8,500 monetary transactions are under the scanner of the federal probe agency in a case booked under the anti-money laundering law and taking cognisance of a Gujarat Police crime branch FIR of 2023
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is probing a “complex network” of agents and facilitators in India, Canada and the U.S. who help Indians illegally enter the U.S. via “bogus” admissions in Canadian colleges, officials said Friday (February 7, 2025).
More than 8,500 monetary transactions are under the scanner of the federal probe agency in a case booked under the anti-money laundering law and taking cognisance of a Gujarat Police crime branch FIR of 2023, they said.
Some international financial companies that aid remittances of funds abroad are also under the investigation scanner of the ED after it conducted 35 searches over the last one year and seized assets worth Rs 92 lakh, the officials said.
The issue has been centrestage of discourse in Parliament and outside after a US military aircraft carrying 104 deported Indians landed in Amritsar on Wednesday.
On Thursday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar informed Parliament that deportations by the US were organised and executed by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities and 15,668 illegal Indian immigrants have been deported from the US since 2009.
On December 24 last year, the ED had said in a press statement that it was investigating the alleged involvement of some Canadian colleges and a few Indian entities in a money laundering case linked to the trafficking of Indians into the U.S. from the Canada border.
The investigation is linked to the death of a four-member Indian family, hailing from Dingucha village in Gujarat. All four died of extreme cold while trying to cross the Canada-U.S. border illegally on January 19, 2022.
Officials said the agency’s probe, till now, has found that there was a “complex network” of agents and “facilitators” spread out in India, Canada and the US. This network manages or facilitates the stay, transportation, visa arrangement and legal issues etc of illegal immigrants, who immigrated through the route of taking “bogus” admission in colleges based in Canada.
One such agent named Fenil Kantilal Patel is based in Canada, the officials said.
ED investigators found that the fees paid to Canadian colleges was paid through a financial services providing company and it was detected that around 8,500 such transactions were made by Gujarat-based students from September 7, 2021 to August 9, 2024.
The agency found that about 4,300 of these transactions were duplicate or done by one user. It is suspected that around 370 individuals have moved to the US using this “illegal” immigration modus operandi, the officials said.
The statement of some of the parents and guardians of these Canada-enrolled students have been recorded and further investigation is going on, they said.
The agency had earlier said that as part of this racket, the accused “arranged” admission in colleges and universities in Canada for people wanted to go to the U.S. illegally.
A Canadian student visa was applied for such people and once they reached that country, instead of joining the college, they “illegally” crossed the US-Canada border, the agency said.
“In view of this, the fee received by colleges based in Canada was remitted back to the individuals’ account,” the agency had alleged.
Indians were “lured” into the racket and charged between Rs 55-60 lakh per person, according to the ED.
The agency also found during a probe that two “entities”, one based in Mumbai and the other in Nagpur, entered into an “agreement” for admission of Indians in universities based in foreign countries on a commission basis.
The agency said about 25,000 students are being referred by one entity and more than 10,000 students by the other to various colleges based outside India every year.
“Further, it is gathered that there are around 1,700 agents/partners based in Gujarat and around 3,500 agents/partners of other entities all over India out of which around 800 are active.” “It is further revealed that around 112 colleges based in Canada have entered into an agreement with one entity and more than 150 with another entity. Their involvement in the instant case is under investigation,” the ED had said.
The agency suspects that out of the total 262 such colleges in Canada, a few, which are geographically located near the Canada-US border, are involved in the trafficking of Indian nationals.

2025.2.7 Navi Mumbai cops scan 70,000 cameras, still no clue on helmet killer
Navi Mumbai police are investigating an incident in which an IT professional succumbed to injuries after being struck with a helmet while riding home from work on February 2. The accused fled the scene after the assault. Ten specialised teams from the Crime Branch and Navi Mumbai police have analysed CCTV footage and recorded witness statements but have yet to identify the accused. “The CCTV images and videos are blurred. None of the cameras have captured the number plate of the scooter, which has significantly hindered the investigation,” an officer said on condition of anonymity.
The deceased has been identified as Shivkumar Sharma, 45. His nephew Dhruv Chadda, said, “My uncle has been beaten to death. I just demand justice and quick apprehension of the accused. I am still shocked that an unknown man could have so much anger that he banged the helmet multiple times in a fit of rage. Whatever has happened is unfortunate, and we are not in a position to further comment on this incident.”
According to police, Sharma worked at a Vashi-based IT firm and was returning to his home in Kharghar when the incident happened. “On February 2, the victim attempted to overtake the accused’s scooter near Belpada and Utsav Chowk. Both stopped in the middle of the road and engaged in a verbal and physical altercation. However, the accused struck the victim’s head with a helmet seven to eight times before fleeing the scene,” a police officer said.
Sharma later arrived at the police station to file an FIR but collapsed. “We took him to the hospital, where he was declared dead after receiving initial medical attention. He died of internal injuries,” an officer said.
An FIR has been registered against two unidentified individuals, and the investigation is ongoing. A senior official from Kharghar police station told mid-day, “The first accused, who was wearing green-coloured clothes, struck the victim with the helmet, while the second accused, wearing a black shirt, is suspected to be his accomplice. We believe the incident happened in a fit of rage, but we have yet to determine the exact motive as the accused remain at large. We are actively investigating the case.”
“The challenge is that despite analysing footage from over 70,000 CCTV cameras, we have not been able to identify the vehicle’s registration number. All we know is that it is a bluish-coloured Activa or Scooty, and the number starts with MH03, which is quite common. None of the cameras have captured the full number plate. We have now circulated a screen grab in our WhatsApp groups, particularly in the eastern suburbs like Chembur and Govandi, where our suspect is more likely to be,” an officer involved in the investigation said.
An FIR has been registered against two unidentified individuals under Section 103 (punishment for murder), Section 351 (criminal intimidation), and Section 3 (common intention) of the BNS.

Siliguri, 06th February: In a major crackdown on cocaine trafficking, the Siliguri Special Task Force (STF) successfully arrested a Nigerian national, Goodluck, who was the mastermind behind a major drug network. The arrest was made in Gurgaon, Haryana, where Goodluck was apprehended with three fake passports and two mobile phones.
The arrest followed STF’s earlier operation on January 11, when they seized 93 grams of cocaine from a textile trader’s home in the area under Khalpara Outpost. The trader, Sartaj Alam (also known as Ali Bhai), was arrested during the raid. During his interrogation, the name of another suspect, Pasaon Moktan, surfaced who was later arrested. Further investigation revealed that Goodluck, based in Haryana, was supplying cocaine to Pasaon, who would then deliver it to Sartaj Alam in Siliguri. Alam would then sell the cocaine in small packets in the local market.
In a mission to catch the mastermind, STF operatives posed as buyers and reached out to Goodluck in Haryana where he was arrested red-handed. During his search, authorities recovered three fake passports and two mobile phones. Preliminary analysis of the mobile phones has revealed additional names linked to the narcotics network.
Sources from the STF revealed that Goodluck had illegally entered India from Nigeria around 12 years ago and started his cocaine business in Haryana. The cocaine was being trafficked from South Africa to India through various routes.
Goodluck has been brought to Siliguri on transit remand, and after being presented in court, he was remanded for 10 days. The STF is continuing its investigation into the extensive drug trafficking operation.

The victim, Lakshmi Tati, a woman from the Hindu Janajatiya community, was initially approached by Muhammad Abu Bakkar, a man who allegedly used a fake identity while proposing marriage. When Lakshmi refused, Bakkar coerced her into coming to his house. However, she managed to escape. 2025.2.5 Gujarat Court Orders 20-Year Jail Term For 18-Year-Old In Rape Case
An 18-year-old male has been convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl and sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment by a sessions court in Dhoraji town, Rajkot district.
The verdict was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge A M Sheikh on January 29, who acquitted the accused of the charge of abduction.
The case originated from a complaint filed by the girl’s father at Dhoraji Taluka police station in June 2024, alleging abduction. At the time, the girl was 16 years old, and the accused was 18.
Both were taken into police custody, and a case was registered against the accused for abduction, rape, and offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (Pocso).
During the proceedings, the girl testified that she had known the accused for five years and that they were in a relationship. She stated that she had previously eloped with him six months before the alleged offence, but his uncle had asked her to return to her parental home.
She further alleged that after her return, she was frequently taunted for bringing dishonour to the family. Feeling distressed, she contacted the accused and asked him to take her away.
According to her testimony, she left her home at night while her family was asleep, carrying her Aadhaar card, birth certificate, and Rs 75,000 in cash.
The two travelled to Dhoraji, Rajkot, and Jamnagar, staying at the farm of the accused’s sister. While there, they learned that the police had summoned his parents for interrogation.
Subsequently, both surrendered at Dhoraji police station. The girl was presented before a judicial magistrate to record her statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code, where she stated that they had engaged in consensual sexual relations.
During the trial, Additional Public Prosecutor Kartikey Parekh argued that, as the victim was underage, her consent to sexual relations could not be considered valid. He sought strict punishment under the Pocso Act.
The court, in its ruling, observed that the girl had left her home voluntarily and had called the accused.
Taking these facts into account, the court determined that the prosecution had failed to establish charges under IPC Sections 363 and 366, which pertain to kidnapping and abduction.
However, the court convicted the accused under IPC Section 376 (2) (N) and the Pocso Act, sentencing him to 20 years of imprisonment. Additionally, the court ordered compensation of Rs 7 lakh to be awarded to the victim.

The duo took up the job and have been working under the contractor for many years. Authorities have not yet found any Indian documents on them,” the officer added.
