2025.2.6 Man, 40, Found Dead in Suspected Suicide A devastating tragedy unfolded in Kanungu District when the body of 40-year-old Arthur Nahurira was found lifeless in a bush near Kihihi Town Council. The Police have registered the incident as a suspected suicide, with investigations still underway. Nahurira, a worker at the Coca-Cola depot in Kihihi, was last seen on the evening of January 30, 2025, when he left his home at around 10:40 PM. His disappearance prompted his brother, Saulo Ndwana, to report the incident to Kihihi Police Station the following day. In a haunting turn of events, Nahurira had sent a farewell message to his aunt, Edith Kiconco, before vanishing, which suggested the distress and despair he may have been feeling. Elly Maate, the Kigezi Police spokesperson, confirmed that Nahurira’s decomposing body was discovered on February 5, 2025, after locals reported a foul smell near the road. “A Coca-Cola bottle containing poison and a packet of Forodan, a toxic substance, were found at the scene, indicating that Nahurira may have used these to end his life,” Maate explained. Nahurira was dressed in black trousers, brown shoes, grey socks, and a white sweater when his body was found. The police have taken the body to Kihihi Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination. Meanwhile, investigations continue to uncover the full circumstances surrounding Nahurira’s tragic death.
2025.2.5 Soroti Gynaecologist Remanded to Prison Over Patient’s Death Dr Godfrey Egwau, a prominent gynaecologist in Soroti City and proprietor of Welfare Clinic, has been remanded to Soroti Government Prisons on charges of rash and negligent conduct leading to the death of his patient, Emmia Lucy Aluka. Soroti Magistrate’s Court presided over by Grade One Magistrate Sarah Nantongo deferred Dr. Egwau’s bail application, stating that she needed time to review the sureties presented before ruling on his request. He will remain in custody until February 6, 2025, when the matter returns to court. The prosecution, led by State Attorney Paul Okello, strongly objected to Dr. Egwau’s bail application, citing concerns over the credibility of the sureties presented by the defense. One of the sureties, John Eperu, a retired police officer aged 64 and a cousin to the accused, was deemed too old to effectively ensure the doctor’s compliance with court proceedings. “How will he help court influence the accused to appear every time he is needed when he is almost the same age as the accused?” Okello argued. Okello also challenged Dr. Egwau’s claims of poor health, stating that his lawyer, Sam Kikomeko, had presented only a single document as proof of his client’s medical conditions—diabetes and hypertension. He urged the court to demand additional medical records before considering the bail request. In response, Kikomeko insisted that bail is a constitutional right and pleaded with the court to grant his client temporary freedom on health grounds. “My lord, my client is diabetic and hypertensive. Keeping him in prison could deteriorate his health. He also has a family to provide for, and that should be reason enough for this honorable court to grant him bail,” Kikomeko argued. The defense presented three individuals as sureties for Dr. Egwau’s release: his 62-year-old wife, Dr Florence Egwau; John Eperu, the retired police officer; and Sylvia Atim, a 36-year-old administrator with the Uganda Bible Society in Teso. However, the state remained skeptical about their ability to compel Dr. Egwau to adhere to court summons. Dr. Egwau was initially arrested on January 26, 2025, following Aluka’s death at Welfare Clinic. He was released on January 29 in compliance with the 48-hour rule but was rearrested on February 3 after the police concluded their investigations. The case has drawn widespread attention in Soroti City, with many residents expressing mixed reactions. Some sympathize with Dr Egwau, citing his long service in the medical field, while others demand justice for Aluka’s family, accusing him of negligence. As he awaits his next court appearance, Dr Egwau will remain in Soroti Government Prisons, where he is expected to make another attempt at securing bail on February 6.
Some of the suspects 2025.2.4 UNBS Uncovers Major Counterfeit Paper Operation in Kampala, Four Arrested In a decisive move to tackle the growing issue of counterfeit products, the Uganda Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has arrested four individuals for distributing over 500 boxes of fake reams of paper in downtown Kampala. Among those arrested were Twinomujuni William and Atuhaire Innocent, part of a network involved in supplying substandard paper across the market. The bust is a significant step in the ongoing fight against fraudulent goods, and authorities are expected to make more arrests in the coming days as they continue to trace the origins of the counterfeit products. UNBS has been receiving increasing complaints from parents and schools about the surge of fake paper, which is being sold as legitimate educational material. The counterfeit paper, known for its poor quality, has raised serious concerns about its negative impact on education. “This is a serious issue,” said Kobere Linda, a UNBS Principal Surveillance Officer. “The widespread use of low-quality paper is damaging the reputation of trusted brands and undermining the quality of educational resources.” Parents, worried about the consequences for their children’s learning, and schools, struggling to manage substandard materials, have voiced their frustration. The operation, carried out through months of undercover surveillance by UNBS officials, is expected to continue, with authorities committed to cracking down on the illegal trade and protecting consumers from further exploitation.

A tragic domestic fire incident in Hoima has claimed the lives of a young mother, her husband, and their four-year-old son, leaving behind an eight-year-old daughter as the sole survivor. Lillian Akonyera, 21, who was allegedly set ablaze by her husband Kenneth Wabyona, succumbed to severe burns at Kiruddu Hospital in Kampala after a four-day battle for her life. The horrific incident occurred on Tuesday in Kiryatete East, Hoima City, when Wabyona, a boda boda rider, reportedly doused their house with petrol and set it on fire. Their son, Junius, who suffered critical burns, died in transit to Mulago Hospital, while Akonyera’s condition deteriorated until she passed away in the early hours of Saturday. Her brother, Muzamiru Kwebiiha, confirmed her death, saying her health kept worsening despite medical efforts. Wabyona, who also sustained severe burns in the fire, was admitted to Kiruddu Hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Sunday evening. Akonyera was laid to rest yesterday at her ancestral home in Kipapati, Hoima District, while Wabyona and their son were buried in Bugambe Sub County, Kikuube District. Their surviving eight-year-old daughter, who managed to escape the inferno, has been taken in by an aunt in Bugambe, uncertain of what her future holds. Albertine Region police spokesperson Julius Allan Hakiza said investigations into the case are ongoing, despite the death of the key suspect. “We hoped the victims would recover, especially the man, to explain what led him to commit such an act, but unfortunately, he has also died. We will inform the public of our findings,” Hakiza stated.
