ASIC has suspended the Australian financial services (AFS) licence of over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives issuer, Prospero Markets Pty Ltd (Prospero). Prospero has also provided an undertaking to ASIC that it will not deal in client funds without ASIC’s agreement.
Prospero’s licence suspension means it cannot provide financial services during the suspension period from 20 December 2023 until 28 February 2024.
Following an administrative hearing, ASIC found that Prospero failed to lodge its annual financial statement and audit report for the financial year ending 30 June 2023 within the prescribed timeframe and in compliance with its AFS licence conditions.
In our earlier article from the end of November, we had reported that Australian Federal Police (AFP) had arrested seven members of an alleged Chinese organised crime syndicate, accusing them of secretly running a prominent, multi-billion-dollar money remitting chain in Australia in what the AFP termed the “most complex AFP-led money laundering investigation” in the nation’s history.
While the AFP did not specifically mention Prospero Markets in its original press release announcing the arrests, or formally link the Changjiang Currency Exchange to Prospero Markets, Australia news site The Australian reported that a number of those arrested (aside from Ding Wang) also have links to Prospero Markets. The Australian also reported that a source informed it that it is “common knowledge” in the Chinese community in Australia that Changjiang Currency Exchange and Prospero Markets were run by the same people.

It comes as the AFP today releases updated restraint results under Operation Avarus-Nightwolf, a money laundering investigation that led to seven members of an alleged organised crime syndicate being charged in October this year.
In October, the value of assets first restrained by the CACT was more than $50 million (including 14 residential properties in Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia; six motor vehicles; 51 bank accounts and shares).
As a result of further action by the CACT, the value of restrained assets in Operation Avarus-Nightwolf is now more than $160 million, including further residential properties in Victoria and Queensland as well as additional bank accounts and luxury items.

‘Traumatised’: Aussie loses $50k after seemingly innocent text 2023.12.11……【Press】【Australia】A Sydney man has been left “traumatised” after he was scammed out of $50,000 for falling for what appeared to be an innocent text from his bank.
Gerald Chin, 41, first received a text he believed was from HSBC Australia, asking him to call them on the night of Wednesday, November 29.
“You have signed in from another mobile. If this was NOT you call us,” the message, obtained by 7Newsread.
According to the outlet, the text appeared in the same thread Mr Chin had received previously from his bank, leading him to believe it was a legitimate message.
After calling, he was asked to provide his personal details and username for verification purposes.
He was then informed by the hacker, pretending to be from the bank, that another device thousands of kilometres away in Perth had logged into his account and their fraud team had spotted attempts to transfer $49,000 of his money.
He had saved up the money to take his parents overseas for Christmas.

“我认为汇丰银行并没有采取足够的严肃态度和响应措施为其系统引入保障措施并就反复出现的诈骗问题提供透明度，”他说。
汇丰银行发言人告诉7News，他们无法对个别案件发表评论，但他们保证“将彻底调查任何报告的诈骗或欺诈案件”。
“汇丰银行非常重视客户安全，”他们表示。
“我们建议客户忽略任何通过电话、电子邮件或短信索取其机密信息（例如 PIN、登录密码或验证码）的请求。”
